Top Ten Bookish Goals For 2013
I already did my Bookish Resolutions for 2013, but I will try to write something here nevertheless.
1. Read one classic
I am not a big fan but I hate being ignorant so I decided to try at least one and see how it goes. I will hopefully at least finish Gatsby from last year.
2. Don't buy and not read books
I do this all the time and I hate myself for it. I'm a book hoarder. I will read them eventually but the number just keeps getting higher, especially now that I have a Kindle. I am out of control and I have to stop.
3. Borrow more from library
Our libraries don't have all that many English books, especially not the new ones, but I'll try to borrow more books instead of buying them all and then never reading them.

4. Read even more
This year's goal is 65 books, which is 12 more than last year and 35 more than 2011. Hopefully I can manage. My TBR pile is even longer.
5. Stick to reading plan
I made a guide for me to follow for reading in 2013 that will make it easier for me to decide what to read. I noticed I read better if I have a plan so that's my new strategy.
6. Write more
I was neglecting writing since summer 2012, but it's not my fault (entirely). I had so many essays to turn in it's been crazy and it left no room for writing for pleasure whatsoever. I hope I get to change that after first set of exams in late January/early February.
7. Read faster
If I want to read 65 books (or even more since my TBR pile is so long) I have to read faster. But sometimes the book just doesn't pull me in, I get a reader block and I get nowhere (like it's been recently going with Eldest).
8. Change reviews style
I noticed I use the same 10 words in my reviews. English is not my first language but even I can do better. I have to change that.
9. Try different genres
I stick to (high) fantasy and dystopia mostly because I adore them both but I have to at least stick my nose for a second into new ones, especially romance. I read so many great reviews on books about romance and I have to try to read at least one or two even though I'm not a big romantic myself.
10. Clean my Goodreads to-read shelf
I have over 5 thousand books on there and they need to be sorted out. I usually add the whole series on there so I decided to kick all but 1st books off and, when I will be adding new ones, just add book 1. I have to clam down or my list is going to become unreadable (like it's not already). And I have to prioritize them so I'll know which are a must and which I'm just curious about. But that's a task for a rainy day.

I have a goal of reading several classics also. Like you, I hate feeling ignorant, especially when teenie bopper shows and movies reference to classics and I'm left feeling like a loser.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with all of your goals!

I love your goals and I totally agree with trying different genres! Great resolutions!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by!
Annie :)
I so recognize myself in the second goal.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with reaching your goals I hope you will manage to keep up with them.
Oh cleaning out my Goodreads shelf is a great goal! And I find that I use the same words in my reviews and English IS my first language. I tend to say "I Love" too much. Sometimes your favorite books can be found outside your comfort zone. I've never read Gatsby, but I love the goal to read more classics. I prefer British lit classics from the 1800s, instead of American 20th century.
ReplyDeleteOh goodness, your number two is epic. Seriously, I own like 800 books I haven't read, so there's just no way. It would take like four years to get through all of those!
ReplyDeleteI've had a reading plan for the last few years and I have a lot of trouble choosing a book if I don't have that to help me. It also aids in scheduling my posts.
The reader block is why I read two books at once, with hope that I can bribe myself through the bad book to get to read the good one.
Don't buy and not read books? That seems like an impossible feat that I should probably try. Good luck with goals in 2013!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only person who buys loads of books and doesn't get round to reading them all - but good idea to try if you can, so good for you! I'm trying to get more into writing this year too, so good luck with that. Great list! Happy reading in 2013!

Admirable resolutions! I also buy too many books that I often never read. I love a full bookshelf, but the library is really a great resource! Thanks for stopping by my TTT.
ReplyDeleteGreat goals!!! Cleaning off Goodreads is one of my goals too... its so easy to get out of control! I hope you succeed with all of them :D
ReplyDeleteAn author that might be helpful for both your "new genres" and "classics" goals might be Georgette Heyer, if you can get your hands on her books where you are. She is credit with popularizing the genre of historical romance. She's also wonderfully witty.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I will check her out :)
Delete#1: I hope you love Gatsby! It's amazing! #3: Libraries are awesome. (: #10: I just started organizing my TBR list. It got way out of hand, too!
ReplyDeleteGreat list! Thanks for stopping by my blog!
You know, DNF is not a bad word. :) If you get stuck in a readers block, set the book aside for later.
