Goodreads synopsis
Blood doesn't lie...
Sydney is an alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of human and vampires. They protect vampire secrets - and human lives. When Sydney is torn from her bed in the middle of the night, at first she thinks she's still being punished for her complicated alliance with dhampir Rose Hathaway. But what unfolds is far worse. Jill Dragomir - the sister of Moroi Queen Lissa Dragomir - is in mortal danger, and the Moroi must send her into hiding. To avoid a civil war, Sydney is called upon to act as Jill's guardian and protector, posing as her roommate in the last place anyone would think to look for vampire royalty - a human boarding school in Palm Springs, California. But instead of finding safety at Amberwood Prep, Sydney discovers the drama is only just beginning...
Review (might contain SPOILERS!)
I was really excited to start the series because I loved Vampire Academy series by Mead and I knew these books are a sort of continuation of the VA story, but this time from a new point of view. I was glad to see some familiar characters being in these books as well, it made me feel like I know about the story already, I felt connected.
The story itself was pretty amazing. I didn't need any getting used to it because I was still under the impression that VA books left on me. It felt like home. I liked that the POV was from Sydney, I always liked her and felt like she didn't get enough time in the VA books. She got even cooler in Bloodlines, she was sort of badass, I never thought she had it in her.
All the secrets that were building up in the book kept me on edge all the time. I hate being left in the dark but it was still pretty amazing. I kept wondering what's wrong with certain characters, who's doing the tattoos and why, why is Keith such an ass? I was kind of used to it from VA as well so it wasn't that hard to wait and find out, only made me read really fast.
The characters were diverse and complex, each having a secret of their own. The book was easy to read, the writing was amazing as always, fluent and packed with just enough action and interest to keep me engaged. It was also funny which at times diffused some tension and shone a sliver of light into the story. I read as often as I could for as long as my eyesight was mostly clear (but often blurry at 1.30 am) and I had a love/hate relationship with cliffhanger chapter endings that forced me to stay up even later than I already was.
The ending of the book was amazing and it turned out I guessed a few of the plot twists yet again. I didn't spoil myself the book though, I was just glad that it ended the way it did. I cannot wait to start the next book in the series!
At first, while reading the book, I noticed myself thinking I don't like this book as much as I liked VA series. It turned out I wasn't right. I loved this book just as I loved others by Mead and I'm so glad I finally started the series. It was an amazing read that I finished at nearly 2 am with no regrets of giving up my precious sleep.
I would recommend this book to all supernatural fans, and especially VA fans in case there are people out there who still haven't read these great books!

"I decided the Alchemists needed an entire department devoted to handling Adrian Ivashkov."
